In addition to including a video camera, the new iPod Nano has a built-in FM radio tuner with the capabilities to pause live radio in a DVR-like fashion and to tag songs heard on the radio so that they can be later purchaced through the iTunes music store. The iPod Nano is the first iPod to include a radio tuner.
I, personally was surprised by this announcement. A FM radio tuner in the latest iPod seems like a strange blend of old media and new media. Also, it seems to me like the previous iPod Nano had everything that most people wanted in a music player and that Apple might have been adding this feature simply for the sake of adding a new feature.
I think that while the Nano's FM tuner could slightly increase radio's popularity, people will still mainly use their iPods to listen to songs that they have downloaded from the internet. What are your thoughts? If you had a new iPod Nano, would you use it to listen to the radio or mainly use it to listen to your own music? Do you think this could spur a comeback in broadcast radio?

I think it is a good idea and brings in a local media source that is useful to the Nano. Lets you sample music outside of what you have bought or here local news and comments at events while out on your bike or something.
ReplyDeleteThat shake/shuffle feature from the last round of updates is what I hate personally. Settle into a nice album to mow the lawn and every bump it changes on you. Like trying to watch TV with someone who can't decide what to watch and keeps changing your station.
Bret is right, the shake shuffle needs an on/off switch - or maybe there is one. Will, can you help us out with this?
ReplyDeleteI've had the same problem with my iPhone accidentally shuffling; it can be very annoying.
ReplyDeleteThankfully, you can turn off the feature on the Nano.

I dont think that they should put a camera into the ipod NANO. they need it in the ipod touch 3g. The radio is ok, but the camera is not needed in any way.
ReplyDeleteI think that while the camera is a nice feature on any device for those random moments where a higher-quality digital camera is not available, the feature is better suited to the iPod Touch because the iPod touch is more of a universal media device that allows internet access as well as music playing and video watching. Also, you can do more with pictures on the iPod touch such as emailing them. I suspect that they left out this feature on the iPod touch so that they have something new to release in the future.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they left the camera out so they could sell at the price point they needed to meet in the market. Adding a camera would certainly force a price increase unless they wanted to reduce their margins. I doubt if that is the case. As volume increases they may experience cost efficiencies in production that would allow the addition of the camera without a price increase.
ReplyDeleteGreat point! It will be interesting to see if they release a camera in the next revision.
